CEM specializes in the testing, certification, repair and maintenance service of biological safety cabinets. All testing is provided with calibrated instrumentation in accordance with the appropriate industry test standard and /or guideline. CEM is an authorized service representative for most hood manufacturers.

CEM is accredited with National Sanitation Foundation (NSF) Standard 49 for the testing and certification of class II biological safety cabinets.

CEM currently provides testing and certification for the following types of biological safety hoods and HEPA filtration devices:

  • Class I Single-Pass Hoods
  • Class II Biological Safety Cabinets
  • Class III Glove Boxes / Isolators

Class II Biological Safety Cabinets are designed to provide product, personnel and environmental protection. Each hood is tested and certified to NSF Standard 49 and manufacture’s specifications. The testing of each hood includes a custom report outlining the final results in detail.

Listed below are the various services provided for the testing of BSCs. Depending on the facility and related industry, the appropriate scope of testing shall apply.

Primary Testing

Inflow Air Velocity Profile: Verifies the hood is providing the proper air balance to protect the operator from the product, as well as the product from contamination that may be introduced from outside of the hood

Downflow Air Velocity Profile: Verifies the airflow being introduced to the work area is unidirectional and functioning per the manufacturer’s specifications

Integrity Testing of HEPA filters: Assures the existing HEPA filters are free of leaks and are properly sealed to prevent leakage or possible contamination to work area or potential hazard to laboratory for room vented units

Airflow Visualization Profile: Verifies the hood is providing non-turbulent airflow to work area and that airflow is not escaping the front opening or sash seal at the workface opening

Site Installation Assessment Test: Assures the hood’s safety alarms and interlocks are functioning properly

Secondary Testing (Optional)

Fluorescent Light Measurement
UV Light Measurement
Electrical Safety Testing
Non-Viable Particle Testing
Viable (Microbial) Testing
Cabinet Leak Test / Pressure Decay
Sound Level Testing
Vibration Testing
